Galleries and art centres in Copenhagen and the surrounding areas

Copenhagen has a flourishing gallery life with many recognized and new galleries which, alongside the art centres, play host to the established as well as the young and up-and-coming names. The galleries and most of the art centres are situated quite extensively in the inner city and in the new gallery areas in some the city's neighbourhoods so the ardent art lover can get through a lot in one day.

Galleries in CopenhagenBredgade has developed into Copenhagen's foremost gallery street. Right here in the heart of the city, you can experience Danish and international contemporary art alongside established painters and sculptors. Visit Galleri Christian Dam, Galleri Asbæk, Galleri Mikkel Andersen and Galleri Christian Egelund which all exhibit high quality Danish and international contemporary art. Galleri Birch focuses on the Cobra painters but also the young and wild. Copenhagen's old meat packing district (Kødbyen) behind Halmtorvet on Vesterbro is rapidly changing, and creative minds and businesses move in next to the butchers in The White Meat City. One of them is Galleri Bo Bjerggaard which has specialised in the Danish painter Per Kirkeby as well as international contemporary art. Also V1 Galleri, which is a powerful young gallery specialising in street art, lists among the new occupants. So does Karriere  – a combined gallery, cafe, bar and restaurant, where internationally recognized artists have created the contemporary art that forms part of the business' design and functions.
In Njalsgade behind Islands Brygge, you find the well-established galleries Nicolai Wallner and Galleri Niels Stærk which exhibit challenging and high-calibre Danish and international contemporary art. Close by, in Sturlasgade, you find Galleri Christina Wilson and Kirkhoff both exhibiting fun and daring contemporary art from home and abroad.
In the big, old industrial buildings of Strandlodskvarteret - close to Amager Beach Park – a new enclave of galleries is on the way with Danish and international contemporary art, e.g. Henningsen Contemporary at Green Square and the experimental Beaver Projects featuring international contemporary art.
Over the past few years, a number of nice galleries have emerged on Carl Jacobsensvej in Valby, housed in some beautiful warehouse-like buildings. Bendixen Contemporary art, Mogadishni and Helene Nyborg exhibit strong Danish and international contemporary art. Copenhart Gallery and LarmGallery present the young, wild and avantgarde works of art while Peter Lav Photo shows Scandinavian photography.

Strand Art Society – also in the city centre – exhibits beautiful and exciting established and new art from the Danish and international world of art.
