Runic stones

What are runic stones and where can you find them?

Runic inscriptions or runes are an ancient form of writing that dates back to the 3rd century BC. In Scandinavia, they're most closely associated with the Vikings, who carved runic inscriptions into stones - sometimes weighing tons - as monuments to fallen comrades or in honor of important events.

In addition to the inscriptions, the stones sometimes feature elaborate designs with intricate patterns and figures of humans, animals and mythical creatures.
Throughout the region of Jutland you'll find many examples of runic stones, some situated precisely where they were erected more than 1,000 years ago! In most cases, the stones can be viewed for free.
Some of the region's more prominent runic stones:

Jelling Stones
St. Rygbergstenen in Randbøl
The Runic Stone from Malt
Hjermind Kirke
Hobro Runestone
Runic Stone in Vester Tørslev Church
Hærulf Stone
