The Danish hotel industry have for a long time been introducing environmental initiatives. In order to obtain a Green Key certificate, the hotel has to commit itself to very stringent rules. More then 50 criteria were set up in the Green Key scheme, aimed at saving water and electricity, using eco-friendly cleaning agents, sorting waste for recycling and motivating staff towards increased environmental awareness. The scheme includes non-smoking rooms as well as the provision for organic and low-fat food in the restaurants. Non-compulsory measures include the composting of green waste and restriction of pesticides outdoors.
