Babette's Feast

Success begets success, and in the south-eastern part of Jutland there is a concentration of restaurants managed by some of the best chefs in the country; the young generation who have made cooking a fine art, famous TV chefs, prize winners, writers of cookbooks and eager participants in the debate on Danish gastronomic culture. You can visit the writer Stig Henriksen, or the brothers Jens Peter and Børge Kolbech (the former used to be the Queen's cook).

Or how about dining at La Cocotte, where you can order the menu from Babette's Feast, Gabriel Axel's Academy Award-winning movie. This is a true gastronomic cornucopia.

Enjoy your meal – in style!
Treating yourself to a visit to one of these restaurants is a multi-faceted experience. The restaurant building itself may be of historical interest or have some other special quality. The location or view may be exquisite, as will be the service, and the produce often comes from the restaurant's own garden. A visit to one of these food shrines makes the perfect end to a day replete with cultural impressions and experiences.

Often these restaurants offer a menu inspired by French cuisine. But the revival of traditional Danish produce that the past few years have seen means that there are still plenty of opportunities to eat Danish-style.

Danish slow and fast food
Sometimes, you may be looking for something more relaxed, in which case a different type of gastronomic experience is required: lunch at a café in the pedestrian street, Italian slow food instead of American fast food, fish and shellfish instead of meat in a burger. The Danish version of the fast food concept is the hotdog stand; where you can eat good Danish pork sausages, a beef sandwich with gravy etc., standing up.

The South Jutland Coffee and Cake
Many inns in the area serve traditional Danish meals and South Jutland specialities. One of these is coffee and cakes, including Brødtort, a cake made from rye bread and whipped cream! The renowned Christiansfelder ginger cakes, baked using an original recipe from the town's bakery, are also not to be missed.
