Smorrebrod from Denmark

Danish Lunch in Copenhagen

Smørrebrød as we know it today dates back to the 19th century and is a combination of a working class hero -  the rye bread lunch sandwiches of farmers and workers - and the lavish dinners of the urban bourgeoisie.

Until recently smørrebrød had almost fallen out of favor among ambitious chefs and bright young things. But that all changed when chefs like Adam Aamann reinvented the Danish lunch tradition with a strong focus on homemade ingredients and local produce. It is safe to say that smørrebrød is back in style again - and now you can even eat smørrebrød in New York City! Come 2012 Aamanns-Copenhagen opens a delicious piece of Denmark in Tribeca, Manhattan.
