Day 3 - Museums and Jazz

Christiansborg houses the Danish Parliament
Listen to jazz or other live music in Copenhagen
In the morning stroll to Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slot), now the seat of the Danish Parliament. Take the guided tours through the royal reception rooms and Parliament areas. Some say the most interesting part of the visit takes place underground. The first building here was Bishop Absalon’s castle, built in 1167, and the ruins of this ancient structure are still visible beneath the modern palace. The picture on the right is taken in the resident Palace church.

Denmark’s first cultural peak occurred during the Viking Age, more than 1,000 years ago. In the afternooon, visit The National Museum which offers an excellent primer in Viking history and showcases Viking artifacts along with other art and antiquities. The Sun Chariot on the right is more than 3,400 years old and one of the most important Bronze Age artifacts found in Denmark.

The Museum of Fine Arts is known for works from the Danish Golden Age of the mid-19th century. While writers Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard were gaining international acclaim, Danish painters such as C.W. Eckersberg and J.T. Lundbye were creating an artistic renaissance in Europe. Their work is on display here.

In the evening enjoy music with the jazz-crazy Danes. Many of the world’s top jazz performers make it a point to schedule a tour stop in Copenhagen, and the local musical talent is first rate as well. Check out one of the city’s fine jazz clubs, such as the Copenhagen Jazz House, or come in July and November when the Copenhagen Jazz Festival takes place.
