Arts, crafts and experience!

In Denmark we have everything within the field of crafts – ceramics, glassware, textiles, jewellery, basketwork and wood, paper, furniture and metal. You can not only admire these handcrafted products in one of the many galleries around the country, you can also see how they are actually made because many craftsmen have opened their workshops to visitors.

You can find such workshops practically all over the country, but some regions have attracted more artists than others which again has attracted more artists to settle down the same place. Thereby, they have created a special environment that you, as a guest, cannot avoid being captured by. This is particularly so in the island of Bornholm, which is actually the place with the highest concentration of craftsmen in Denmark! Another example is Rørholmsgade in Copenhagen where many different artists have settled in the same street and have set down workshops with each their individual speciality.

Another place where you can meet craftsmen and their products is at one of the many markets for design and crafts, which you can experience several places in Denmark. These markets are especially numerous during summer and the months before Christmas. The local tourist offices will be able to help you with information about what is going on art-wise in their region.

Here are some home pages that you can visit if you want to know what’s happening on the Danish handicraft scene!

www.danskekunsthaandvaerkere.dk belongs to the Danish Arts and Crafts Association which is an organisation of professional, creative craftsmen and designers. It provides you with a good overview of the development within the field of crafts and design.

www.craftsbornholm.dk focuses particularly on craftsmen living on Bornholm, but it also describes in detail some of the different work processes that are used in connection with the different types of crafts.

www.danishcrafts.dk belongs to Danish Crafts which is a nationwide information centre which works to render visible, promote and increase sales of Danish crafts in Denmark and abroad. The page gives among other things access to the individual craftsmen’s home pages.

Once a year, Danish Crafts puts together a collection that is marketed internationally. The collection comprises interior design in the categories ceramics, glass, textiles and furniture. The collection is called the Crafts Collection and is on display in the Danish Crafts' showroom at Amagertorv 1 in the heart of Copenhagen.

In addition to this, Danish Craft publishes a national guide to 67 leading craftsmen, galleries and shops. Both internationally oriented galleries as well as smaller ones with attached workshops, offering the customer the possibility of meeting the craftsman in person, are represented in the guide. The guide is in Danish, English and German and is available from museums, exhibition rooms and book shops all over the country. It can also be obtained from the participating galleries and shops, and can be order from Danish Crafts at www.danishcrafts.dk or by phone + 3312 6162. The price is DKK 85,-.
