Panorama route: The Royal Marshland Route

Wide-open marshlands and a royal village with gourmet treats

Schackenborg Castle

1. The Royal Marshland Route

Denmark has been a kingdom for more than 1,000 years and there are castles and palaces nationwide. The Royal Marshland Route offers a unique chance to experience the romance of a royal village combined with a chance to experience some of the great classics of 20th century Danish design. The 41 km route winds across the wide-open marshland from the heritage town of Tønder to the village of Møgeltønder, which is home to the youngest son of the Queen of Denmark, HRH Prince Joachim. Here there are thatched cottages, cobblestone lanes and a local inn, Schackenborg Slotskro, which is co-owned by the prince. The picturesque inn serves gourmet cuisine made with locally sourced produce, also from the prince’s farmland. The town of Tønder with its 17th century Frisian-styled townhouses offers a picturesque setting of cafés and contemporary design stores. The hometown of Hans J Wegner, the old water tower, which is part of the local South Jutland heritage museum, features some of his legendary furniture designs and sweeping views of the marshland.

In 2014, Denmark celebrates the centenary of the birth of Hans J. Wegner with an exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen until 2 November.
