Walking at Lammefjorden – a landscape shaped by human hands

Lammefjorden is one of the most remarkable landscapes in Northwest Zealand. Where a shallow fjord once lay, flat, fertile farmland now stretches to the horizon. The trails at Audebo Pumping Station lead through this reclaimed land, where the history of the soil literally lies beneath your feet. The area is ideal for walkers seeking open vistas, fresh air and a landscape with a truly unique story.

From seabed to Europe's finest carrots

The draining of Lammefjorden began in 1873 and permanently transformed the western part of Holbæk Municipality. Audebo Pumping Station was built to keep the reclaimed area dry, and it still functions to this day. The rich, nutrient-dense seabed soil proved perfect for intensive farming, and Lammefjorden has since become world-famous for its carrots. Walking along the canals and fields, you can clearly sense that this landscape sits lower than its surroundings – in places up to six metres below the original sea level.

Trails and wildlife

From Audeboparken near Gislinge, you can choose between several routes of varying length. The paths follow the drainage canals and dykes that cut through the flat landscape. The terrain is level and accessible, so younger children can easily walk along too. Along the way, you pass reedbeds and small ponds where birdlife is surprisingly abundant. Lapwings, snipe and marsh harriers are regular sights, and during migration seasons, thousands of geese rest on the open fields. Bring binoculars – it is well worth it.

The atmosphere at the pumping station

The pumping station itself has a raw, industrial aesthetic that contrasts beautifully with the soft green landscape. The large pumps and sluice gates bear witness to the enormous engineering effort required to claim land from the sea. The area around the station is peaceful and undisturbed – you rarely encounter many other visitors here, and on quiet mornings, all you hear is the wind in the reeds and the calls of birds. It is a fine spot to pause, enjoy a flask of coffee and simply let time pass.

A landscape for every season

Lammefjorden changes character with the seasons. In spring, the fields glow in pale green and lapwings tiptoe across the freshly ploughed earth. Summer brings tall crops and a horizon that dissolves into haze. Autumn winds blow freely across the bare land, and large flocks of geese gather in the low-lying areas. Winter walks on the frozen paths have their own particular stillness – the expansive landscape takes on almost arctic dimensions when hoarfrost covers the fields.

Practical information for walkers

Audebo Pumping Station is located near Gislinge in Holbæk Municipality. Parking is available at Audeboparken, from where the trails begin. The paths are unsurfaced in some sections, so walking boots are recommended in wet periods. If you wish to combine the walk with other experiences, the town of Holbæk is just twenty minutes to the east, and Odsherred with its rolling hills and art scene is a short drive to the north.
