The church has roots dating back to the 12th century and today appears as a composite building shaped by several historical periods. Over the centuries, it has been extended and adapted to changing needs, yet it has retained its clear medieval character. Draaby Church tells the story of both local piety and its close connection to the manor culture of the surrounding area.

Church and architectural history

The original chancel and nave date from the 12th century and were built of rough fieldstones on a base of tufa stone. Archaeological finds beneath the church suggest that an even older wooden church may once have stood on the site. In the 14th century, the church was fitted with rib vaults, and in the 15th century both a sacristy and a western extension were added, built of monk bricks. The tower was erected after the Reformation in the first half of the 17th century, while the porch and northern extensions were added towards the end of the 18th century.

Furnishings and the connection to Jægerspris

Inside the church, you encounter furnishings from several periods. The altarpiece from 1630 depicts the Last Supper and originates from the workshop of Hans Barchmann. A preserved crucifix from the 15th century bears witness to the church’s medieval roots. The pulpit and sounding board have been restored and once again appear in their original colours. In the porch, the coat of arms of Countess Danner can be seen, and both the organ and the gravestones link the church closely to Jægerspris Castle and its history.

The unique frescoes – the church’s greatest attraction

The unique frescoes of Draaby Church are among its most striking features. They were executed by the so-called Isefjord Workshop around 1460–1480 and cover large parts of the church interior. The motifs range from the Creation and the Fall in the chancel to scenes from the life of Jesus, the Passion and the Last Judgement in the nave.

Stories in the vaults

In the eastern vaults, you encounter scenes from the Old Testament, while the next vaults contain the legend of Saint Lawrence – told in a vivid visual narrative rich in drama and symbolism. These are followed by stories of the birth of Jesus, the Three Holy Kings and the church’s great scene of the Last Judgement. The frescoes are intended to be read as a pictorial narrative and offer a rare insight into the visual world of the Middle Ages.
