The perfect recipe for an outdoor day out

Planning the perfect family outing does not have to be difficult. Flyvesandet is one of the most distinctive places in North Funen, because the landscape is constantly changing. One moment you are racing down the soft sand dunes, and the next you are walking beneath the giant beech trees of Storskoven, where you may be lucky enough to spot fallow deer, hares or a large white-tailed eagle overhead.

Getting ready for the trip

  • The must-have kit: A good rucksack with packed lunches, hot cocoa or coffee, a blanket, sun cream and practical clothing for all kinds of weather.
  • The secret packed-lunch tip: Stop by Egebjerg Fruit Plantation on the way. Here you can buy delicious local apple juice or cider for lunch – a simple way to make your meal outdoors even better.
  • Before you leave home: Print a beach bingo sheet from visitnordfyn.com/naturebingo and download the free Natureventyr app.

4 fun stops along the way

  1. Save the dragon at the end of the world (for children aged 3–9): Start your expedition in the forest with the Naturetales app. Here you follow a 1.5 km route where you help the troll witch Sigrid save a dragon from sinister dragon hunters. The walk becomes an interactive and exciting story in which the children are the heroes.
  2. Go treasure hunting for amber and belemnites: Flyvesandet is one of the best places in North Funen for finding fossils. Head down to the white sandy beach and search through the seaweed and among the stones. Who will be the first to find a real belemnite or a golden piece of amber? Be sure to look out towards the sea as well – sometimes small porpoises or seals swim past close to the shore.
  3. Spot white-tailed eagles from the bird tower at Agernæs: Follow the path westwards to the lovely bird tower. From here, you get a fantastic panoramic view across Agernæs Flak, Æbelø and, on a clear day, all the way to Samsø. The area is a protected wildlife reserve, and here you can study the information boards about birdlife and keep an eye out for the huge white-tailed eagle or the charming short-eared owl.
  4. Find rare flowers and slide down the dunes: Flyvesandet is the only place in North Funen with real sand dunes. Let the children tumble about in the soft sand while you look out for the area’s very special plants. If you look carefully in the drier areas, you may find the rare and beautiful pasqueflower, a purple bloom that grows in only a few places in Denmark.

The perfect summer/autumn tip

When the outing is over and you are heading home, take a route past the lovely local farm shops in North Funen. It is a great way to bring home fresh local treats and souvenirs for the table.

ℹ️ Plan your trip

  • Transport & parking: The easiest way to get there is by car via Flyvesandsvej. There is a large free car park at Flyvesandsvej 38, 5450 Otterup, right at the tip where the beach begins. If you do not have a car, cycling or Flextrafik is recommended.
  • Toilet: There is a public toilet at the edge of the woods facing the beach (maintained by DCU Camping). It is open during the season from 1 April to 15 September.
  • Dogs and dog forest: Dogs are very welcome on a lead, and there is a nice small dog forest near the campsite.
    • Please note: When the Blue Flag is flying (1 June to 15 September), dogs are not allowed to swim or stay on the sandy bathing beach itself, but you may pass through with them on a lead along the top by the dyke.
  • Access in nature: You may walk on the beach at any time of day. In Storskoven (the beautiful old beech woodland), access is allowed on the paths from 6.00 am until sunset.
  • Private area: Please respect the signs to the east (towards Tørresø) – the large woodland and field areas belong to Egebjerggård Estate and are private.
