Fjordstien – walking along the Isefjord from Holbæk to Mårsø

The Fjordstien is part of route 40, which runs along the south-western shore of the Isefjord in Holbæk Municipality. The route starts from Holbæk Harbour and follows the coast north-west to the small fishing hamlet of Mårsø. Along the way you get a close-up view of the fjord landscape that most people only ever see from a distance. From Holbæk Harbour along the fjord shore

The starting point at Holbæk Harbour gives the route an urban beginning. The shores of the Isefjord along the Fjordstien are characterised by salt marshes that flood at high tide and bloom with sea asters and sea lavender in late summer. Lapwings trill over the meadows in spring, and during migration season wading birds gather in flocks along the water's edge. Further north-west the coastline becomes more varied. Stretches of low scrub alternate with small shingle beaches, and the terrain rises in places to low cliffs from which the view over the fjord opens up further. Here you can sense that the Isefjord is not a still body of water – current and wind have shaped the coast, and stones and seaweed lie in bands along the water's edge. In winter it can blow hard, but that also gives the walk a raw, unpolished character that appeals to those who prefer nature without a filter.

Mårsø – a quiet finish

The Fjordstien ends at Mårsø, a small fishing hamlet tucked away from the main road. The place has the atmosphere of a time capsule – small houses, a boat berth and a calm that feels as if it has always been there. It is a fine spot to finish a walk, because the contrast with the starting point in Holbæk makes the journey clear: you have gone from city to country, from noise to silence, from harbour to fishing village. The route's length makes it manageable as a long day walk, and for those who want to extend the experience, it is possible to walk the route in reverse or combine it with other trails in the area.

The town of Holbæk offers museums, cafés and a lively harbour scene worth exploring before or after the walk.
