Hærvejs cycle route: Skelhøje - Thorning
You start your ride right at the edge of the dramatic landscape created during the Ice Age, with the Dollerup Hills to the east and flat moors to the west. Along the route you'll cycle in the footsteps of those who were here before you. You'll see ancient cave roads, castle ruins, burial mounds and much more along the 10 kilometres.
Experiences on the route
Thorning Church
Thorning Church consists of a choir and nave in Romantic style. In 1743, the church underwent a major remodelling and was extended to the west and equipped with a tower, which still adorns the sky today.
If you take a walk in the cemetery, west of the tower you can find a grave of Mads Doss and a memorial stone of the cow racer Claus Vattrup, known from Blicher's story about ‘Messingjens’.
All year round, from sunrise to sunset, Thorning Church welcomes you.
The Blicher region at Museum Silkeborg
Thorning, close to Silkeborg, is the old vicarage that was home to the priest and poet Steen Steensen Blicher from 1819 to 1825. Today, this historic gem is home to the Blicheregnens Museum, part of the larger Museum Silkeborg.
At the museum you can dive into Steen Steensen Blicher's life, his short stories and his views on the society around him. You can explore the harsh life of the 19th century on the moors and learn more about the farmers, rascals and hucksters.
The museum is not only a treasure trove of literature, it is also a witness to Denmark's history. In the exhibition ‘The Battle for Power - The Battle of Grathe Hede’ you can experience the fierce civil war of the early Middle Ages, where the future of Denmark was shaped. You can also take a closer look at animals from around the world, from majestic eagles to playful penguins and even a single wolf, in the exciting animal collection.
