Kisserup Shelter Site
Stay overnight in architect-designed shelters surrounded by nature, history and outdoor life in Skjoldungernes Land National Park near Kisserup.
Architect-designed shelters inspired by Viking history
Kisserup Shelter Site offers distinctive Skjoldunge shelters inspired by the area’s legendary past and the Viking ships of Roskilde Fjord.
The shelters are shaped like a ship’s prow, giving them a striking architectural expression and creating a clear connection between the landscape, history and the overnight experience. The carefully considered design provides both shelter and a strong sense of closeness to nature.
A different kind of shelter experience for the whole family
The shelters differ markedly from traditional shelters. Inside, the space is cave-like and intimate, while still offering plenty of room for both children and adults. In the narrow end, there is standing height, making it easy to change clothes, while the wide end faces the campfire area. Benches are installed here for seating or cooking and can be folded up, allowing you to follow the activity around the fire directly from inside the shelter. Side hatches can be closed for greater privacy or opened so you can lie inside the shelter with views of the surrounding nature and the starry sky.
Facilities, community and care for nature
The shelter site is open to everyone and includes a campfire area and a picnic shelter, making it ideal for breaks, shared meals and outdoor stays. The interior design of the shelters allows for both social interaction and more private overnight stays.
Firewood must be brought along, and it is not permitted to collect firewood at the shelter site, ensuring the area is preserved for future visitors.
The shelter site is maintained by the association Vores Sted Kisserup, which also uses the area for local events and activities.
Booking and experiences in the surrounding area
Overnight stays in the shelters can be booked free of charge via Friluftsguiden. The shelter site is located in a varied landscape that invites active experiences, and the Ice Age Route, cycle route 44, passes approximately 1.5 km from the site. This offers excellent opportunities to combine an overnight stay with hiking or cycling through the undulating Ice Age landscape of the national park.
