The Marguerite Route Between Korsør and Skælskør – The Scenic Coastal Road of West Zealand

The brown signs with the white daisy are among Denmark's most recognisable road markers, and the stretch between Korsør and Skælskør is one of the most beautiful sections of the entire Marguerite Route. Here you do not simply drive from A to B – you drive through a landscape that shifts character from maritime harbour town through lush villages to one of West Zealand's most charming market towns.

From the Great Belt Bridge to Korsør's Historic Town Centre

The route begins at the foot of the Great Belt Bridge, where the modern feat of engineering creates a dramatic contrast to what lies ahead. Korsør is the first stop, and the town deserves more than a passing glance. By the harbour stands Korsør Fortress, one of Denmark's oldest military installations, which has guarded the entrance to the Great Belt since the Middle Ages. The fortress now houses the Korsør Town and Ferry Museum, where the story of the crossing between Zealand and Funen is told through centuries of sailing ships, steamers and ultimately the bridge you have just crossed. The old town behind the fortress is a quiet quarter of well-preserved houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and Algade offers shops and cafés with a local atmosphere.

Along the Coast Heading South

From Korsør, the Marguerite Route turns south and follows the coast towards Skælskør. This is where the stretch truly shows its strength. The road winds through a landscape of fields, small villages and views over the Great Belt. You pass Halskov Odde with its wide views over the strait and can see the bridge from an entirely different angle than from the motorway. The landscape is flat and open with the particular quality that West Zealand's coastal scenery possesses – a mix of cultivated fields, wild hedgerows and glimpses of the sea between the hilltops.

The Villages Along the Way

One of the Marguerite Route's great strengths is that it leads through villages that most people drive past on the motorway without ever knowing they exist. Between Korsør and Skælskør, you pass quiet communities with half-timbered farmsteads, Romanesque village churches and roadsides where wildflowers bloom in full glory during summer. It is precisely the kind of Denmark the route was created to showcase – the quiet, green and charmingly imperfect countryside that still exists between the larger towns.

Arriving in Skælskør

Skælskør appears as a surprise, even when you know it is there. The colourful houses along the harbour, the narrow lagoon cutting inland, and the compact town centre with its lanes and squares make it one of the most photogenic market towns on Zealand. The Marguerite Route leads naturally into town, and from here you can choose to continue south towards Bisserup and Karrebæksminde or stop and explore Skælskør on foot. The lagoon invites a walk along its banks, and from the harbour you can take a boat trip on the excursion vessel Skælskør 5.

Practical for Drivers and Cyclists

The stretch between Korsør and Skælskør suits both car and bicycle. The road is narrow and quiet, and the pace is low – exactly as it should be on a route designed for seeing the landscape, not for arriving as quickly as possible. For cyclists, there are marked routes in the area, and the distance is manageable as a half-day or full-day trip with stops along the way. En route you pass close to Kobæk Strand, one of the finest bathing areas on this part of the coast and an obvious place for a break on a warm day.

Experiences Along the Route

The Marguerite Route between Korsør and Skælskør is more than a drive or a cycle ride – it is an invitation to discover the West Zealand that lies between the major tourist attractions. Trelleborg Viking Fortress near Slagelse is within easy reach, and the great forests near Sorø with their lakes and trails are just a short detour inland.
