Experience the history, harbour life and wartime stories of Nexø at Nexø Museum
Located by Nexø Harbour, Nexø Museum offers fascinating stories about seafaring, trade, war and everyday life in one of Bornholm’s most important harbour towns. The museum is housed in the historic “Nexøe Vagt” building from 1796, which is itself an important part of the town’s history.
Visitors can explore Nexø’s development from a busy maritime town to the dramatic events of World War II, when the town was bombed by Soviet aircraft in May 1945.
The story of the bombing and rebuilding of the town
On the museum’s first floor, the exhibition “A Town at War” tells the powerful story of the bombings of Nexø on 7 and 8 May 1945, when large parts of the town were destroyed. Through photographs, objects and personal stories, visitors gain insight into life during the war and the rebuilding of the town afterwards – including the famous Swedish houses that still characterise Nexø today.
Seafaring, trade and harbour life
The museum also explores Nexø’s proud maritime traditions and the many ships and shipping companies that created life around the harbour for centuries. Visitors can learn about the age of sailing ships, international trade and Nexø’s importance as a harbour and trading town on Bornholm. A visit to Nexø Museum fits perfectly with a walk through the harbour, the cosy streets and the maritime atmosphere of Nexø.
