Skælskør Harbour – Marina and Harbour Life
Skælskør Havn sits in the heart of the historic market town after a seven-kilometre fjord approach. Experience colourful half-timbered houses, a vibrant waterfront, and one of Denmark’s most beautiful sailing approaches in Slagelse Municipality.

Skælskør Havn – Marina in the Heart of a Historic Market Town
In the middle of the old market town of Skælskør, where the fjord winds through the town like a river, lies Skælskør Havn – one of western Zealand’s most atmospheric marinas. Sailing into Skælskør is an experience in itself: the seven-kilometre approach through Skælskør Fjord takes you past grazing cattle, lush meadows, and a landscape that slowly opens towards the town at the head of the fjord.
The Approach – An Experience in Its Own Right
Skælskør Fjord is well-marked and amply deep throughout, making the passage straightforward even for larger boats. But it is not the navigation that impresses – it is the landscape. The fjord is narrow and intimate, and in places you sail so close to the bank that you could almost touch the grass. It is one of the most photogenic approaches in Danish waters, and many sailors describe it as the highlight of their entire trip.
Along the way, you pass the protected landscape around Borreby Manor – one of Denmark’s oldest country houses – and the shallow areas that attract rich birdlife.
The Town at the Harbour
When you berth in Skælskør, you are in the middle of town. This is a rarity among Danish marinas – from your boat, it is just a few steps to cobbled streets, cafés, shops, and restaurants. Skælskør is one of Zealand’s oldest market towns with roots dating back to the 12th century, and the well-preserved town centre bears clear traces of centuries of trade and seafaring.
The streets are filled with colourful half-timbered houses, small specialist shops, and galleries. The harbour area itself is vibrant and inviting with benches along the quay, views over the fjord, and the relaxed atmosphere that characterises Danish market towns in summer.
Culture and History
Skælskør has a rich cultural history. The town has produced artists and writers, and the creative spirit is still felt in the many galleries and workshops. Borreby Manor just outside town is a Renaissance estate from the 16th century, offering walks through the surrounding parkland.
Skælskør is also the gateway to the islands of Agø and Omø in the Great Belt, reachable by ferry from Stigsnæs just south of town.
Experiences in the Area
From Skælskør, it is a short distance to Korsør to the north with its fortress and views of the Great Belt Bridge. To the east lies Sorø with its abbey church and lakes. The fjord itself invites kayaking and SUP – the calm water and beautiful surroundings make it perfect for both beginners and experienced paddlers.
