In the spring of 1998 the first science center on the topic salt was opened in Denmark. The center is situated on the harbour in Mariager, close to the water, as the extraction of salt, as practised in Denmark since the middle age, has always been connected with the sea and the saltwater.

In Mariager Saltcenter the visitors will gain a rich insight in the history of salt through experience and activities. Try "The Dead Sea" in miniature in which you may feel the carrying capacity of the salted 37 degrees warm water. Everything is kept floating by the salt and mineral mixture. In the seething hut the seething master will tell you about the procedure while seething. He uses the same methods as has been used in Denmark through the centuries. Try  seething your own salt and taste the brine of various concentrations in the laboratory of the Center.

Go exploring in the salt gallery and get the impression of mining hundreds of years ago. In the showroom with the high ceilings you'll immediatly want to go exploring in the wonderful world of salt and you'll be fascinated by the history of "The White Gold" from the formation af salt 260 mill. of years ago to the extraction in the 20th century.
