Bisserup Strand – Family-Friendly Beach on the Great Belt

South of Skælskør the landscape opens towards the Great Belt, and here lies Bisserup Strand as one of the most popular beaches in southwest Zealand. The coastline offers kilometres of sandy beach with shallow, calm water, making it an ideal choice for families with children. The sea water is clean and clear, and the bottom slopes so gently that even the smallest children can splash around safely close to shore.

Snorkelling and Life Beneath the Surface

Bisserup Strand is not just a bathing beach – it is also one of the area's best spots for snorkelling. Along the rocky sections near the sandbars, small fish, crabs and seaweed thrive in abundance, and with a mask and snorkel you can explore a surprisingly colourful underwater world just a few metres from the shore. Children and adults alike can spend hours peering into the clear water, and the experience adds an entirely different dimension to a day at the beach.

Room to Play and Explore

Close to the beach you will find a well-maintained playground where children can climb and play while adults enjoy the view across the belt. The area around Bisserup has preserved a relaxed and informal atmosphere reminiscent of the charm of old Danish seaside resorts – there is no beach bar with loud music here, but rather peace, birdsong and the sound of waves lapping against the sand. It is the kind of place where you spread your blanket early in the morning and do not pack up until the sun begins to set.

Location and Surroundings

Bisserup sits on the south coast of Zealand within Slagelse Municipality, roughly 15 kilometres south of Skælskør. The village has a small harbour and a handful of holiday cottages, and the coastline stretches in both directions with fine beach sections. To the west you can walk along the coast to Stigsnæs, and to the east the Karrebæk Fjord opens up with its rich birdlife and flat meadow landscapes. Parking is available close to the beach, with easy access to the water from several points along the coast.

A Peaceful Alternative

Compared to the better-known beaches on Zealand's north coast, Bisserup offers something rare: space. Even on the hottest summer days you can find quiet spots, and the atmosphere is more local than touristy. The shallow beach section is particularly popular among families with small children, but couples also find their place a little further out where the water deepens and the view across the Great Belt and Langeland unfolds along the horizon.

Experiences in the Area

Bisserup lies within short distance of several of southwest Zealand's most interesting destinations. The town of Skælskør with its colourful houses along the river is worth a visit, and the old merchant street offers cafés and small shops. To the east you can explore Karrebæksminde and Enø Beach, and to the west Stigsnæs coastal battery holds a piece of Danish military history with a beautiful waterfront setting.
