Christmas at the Viking Settlement, Frederikssund Vikingeboplads
Experience the Festival of Light in the World of the Vikings
As the year draws to a close, you can experience how the Vikings celebrated the return of the light. The tradition dates back to the Viking Age, when the chieftain gathered people for a feast in the longhouse. Today, you are invited to an atmospheric Festival of Light with soup, a solstice speech, and a winter Viking market.
The Viking Square comes alive from midday, when the market stalls in the small wooden huts open. Here you can browse crafts, jewellery, and unique items, while modern-day Vikings demonstrate their skills.
An atmospheric celebration at dusk
As darkness falls, lights are lit in the trees and a special atmosphere spreads around you. It is here that you are reminded brighter days are on the way – a calming experience in the midst of the Christmas hustle and bustle.
Taste the Vikings’ winter
Even though the cold may bite, there is always something warm to enjoy. Look forward to mulled wine, hot chocolate, or beer liqueur, and satisfy your hunger with pancakes, roast pork sandwiches, sausages, or smoked eel – a traditional Danish delicacy. You will also find roasted almonds, salted herring, and other winter favourites.
Gifts with history
At the market you can discover very special Christmas presents. Jewellery, wickerwork, and leather goods are waiting to be found, so you can bring home something truly unique.
Most importantly, in the World of the Vikings you have time to relax, talk together, and feel the sense of community – just as the Vikings once did.
Free admission and free parking.
