The Harbour of Røsnæs
Røsnæs Havn at Zealand’s westernmost point is a small historic harbour with dramatic nature as its nearest neighbour. Experience chalk cliffs, rare flora and views across the Great Belt from this unique location in Kalundborg Municipality.

Røsnæs Havn – The Small Harbour at Zealand’s Westernmost Point
On the northern side of the Røsnæs peninsula, also known as Nyby Havn, lies Røsnæs Havn – a modest fishing harbour with an unusual history and a location that is hard to match. The harbour belongs to Kalundborg Municipality and sits where the Great Belt meets Kalundborg Fjord, with views across the water in almost every direction.
A Harbour with Wartime History
Røsnæs Havn was built at the beginning of World War II as an employment project to keep local men at home and prevent them from being sent to Germany. The original plan was for fishing boats from Kalundborg to relocate here, but the harbour remained small and intimate. Today it is primarily a marina for locals and visiting sailors seeking a quiet port of call close to Røsnæs’ scenic coastline.
The harbour’s modest size is part of its charm. There are no shops, no fuel station – just the breakwater, the boats, and the open sea. It is a place you seek out for the nature and the silence, not for the facilities.
Røsnæs – The Peninsula with Dramatic Cliffs
From the harbour, it is only a short walk to Røsnæs’ spectacular northern coast, where chalk cliffs rise from the water creating a landscape more reminiscent of Møns Klint than the rest of western Zealand. The peninsula is Zealand’s westernmost point, and the raw nature out here is unique to the area – orchids in the chalk grassland, rare butterflies, and a flora that thrives in the mild coastal climate.
Røsnæs Nature Park extends across the entire tip of the peninsula, offering walking trails along the cliffs with views over the Great Belt, Samsø, and Funen. On clear days, you can see all the way to the east coast of Jutland. It is one of western Zealand’s most captivating nature experiences.
Sailing and Fishing
Røsnæs Havn is a natural stopping point for sailors passing through the Great Belt or Kalundborg Fjord. The approach can be challenging in westerly winds, but in calm weather the harbour is a peaceful anchorage with direct access to the peninsula’s walking trails. For anglers, the coast around Røsnæs offers excellent sea trout fishing, particularly in spring when the fish move into shallow water.
Experiences in the Area
Røsnæs Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is a landmark that has guided ships since the 1800s. Kalundborg town is a short drive east with its five-towered church, museums, and vibrant harbour area. Along the northern side of the peninsula, you pass several small coves and beaches that invite swimming and relaxation.
For families with children, the walking trails on Røsnæs are manageable and varied – with opportunities to explore cliffs, find fossils, and spot the cattle from the wild grazing programme. Find more experiences at destinationsjaelland.dk.
