Ferry to Nekselø – a car-free island in the Sejerø Bay
The crossing from Havnsø to Nekselø takes just 25 minutes, but stepping off the small ferry feels like arriving in a different era. Nekselø is one of Denmark's few car-free islands – no roads, no traffic noise, just narrow paths winding through rolling pastures and along dramatic coastal cliffs.
The island sits in the Sejerø Bay off Kalundborg Municipality and measures barely two kilometres in length. Yet it offers surprising variety: to the south, the wooded hill of Bavnebjerg provides panoramic views across the bay, while to the north, flat meadows burst with wildflowers in early summer.
Walking the island loop trail
A marked hiking trail circles the entire island – roughly 6 kilometres through shifting landscapes. You pass the old lighthouse, walk along cliff edges where swallows nest in the clay walls, and wander through the tiny island village with its handful of houses and historic 14th-century church.
Birdwatchers find particular reward during the summer months. Nekselø hosts significant breeding colonies of cormorants and herons, and from the northern tip, harbour porpoises can regularly be spotted in the bay.
Getting there
The ferry operates year-round from Havnsø harbour. The 25-minute crossing makes Nekselø perfect for a day trip. Since the island is car-free, everything is explored on foot – sturdy shoes are recommended as paths are natural and can be muddy after rain.
Havnsø itself is a cosy fishing harbour on the west coast of Zealand, about 20 minutes' drive from Kalundborg. The village has a small harbour with food options and shops – ideal for fuelling up before or after your island adventure.
Experiences in the area
The area around Havnsø offers far more than just the ferry crossing. The entire Sejerø Bay coastline invites hiking and cycling, with views of small islands and open sea. Nearby Dragsholm Castle, one of Scandinavia's oldest, combines history with fine dining. In Kalundborg, the unique Five-Towered Church from the 12th century awaits.
