An art museum in the heart of Oluf Høst’s world
Among the cliffs, gardens and charming streets of Gudhjem, you will find Oluf Høst Museet – located in the former home of artist Oluf Høst and his wife Hedvig, known as Norresân. Here, you can experience one of Bornholm’s most atmospheric art museums in the very surroundings where many of the paintings were originally created.
The museum houses a rich collection of Oluf Høst’s works, displayed exactly where the artist once lived and worked. Each year, the museum also presents changing special exhibitions focusing on art, history and stories connected to Bornholm.
The enchanting rock garden surrounding the villa is also worth exploring. Stretching up towards the Bokul cliff formation, the garden features old quarry areas, fig and mulberry trees, as well as the studios where Oluf Høst and later his son worked. It is easy to sense the special nature and light of Bornholm that inspired Oluf Høst throughout his life.
Art, Gudhjem and the special light of Bornholm
Oluf Høst (1884–1966) was the only Bornholm-born artist in the famous Bornholm School of painters, which helped shape Danish art in the early 20th century. He became especially known for his atmospheric paintings of Bornholm, including smokehouses, round churches, midsummer bonfires and landscapes around Gudhjem.
In 1933, Oluf Høst received the prestigious Eckersberg Medal, and his works were exhibited internationally in cities such as New York, Venice and Brussels.
A visit to Oluf Høst Museet can easily be combined with a stroll through Gudhjem’s steep streets, small shops and harbour atmosphere – a cosy cultural break in one of Bornholm’s most iconic towns.
