Roskilde Light Festival – light, culture and community in the winter darkness
Roskilde Light Festival is an annual light and cultural event that transforms the town centre of Roskilde into an atmospheric experience during the dark winter months. Along the Cultural Trail, art, light, music and community come together in a celebration that invites both residents and visitors to experience the city in a new way.

During the festival, streets, squares and cultural venues are filled with light installations, artworks and sensory experiences. The works range from poetic and playful installations to more experimental expressions that engage both sight and sound. The experiences are spread along the Cultural Trail, creating a coherent route through the heart of Roskilde.
Light procession and shared experiences
A central element of the festival is the illuminated procession that moves through the city accompanied by music and a strong sense of community. The procession is often supported by live music and offers opportunities for both active participation and for enjoying the atmosphere as a spectator along the route. The shared focus on light and movement brings the many elements of the event together.
Cultural institutions in a new light
Several of the city’s cultural institutions take part in the Light Festival with special activities and light-based experiences. The cathedral, the library, museums and other cultural venues serve as natural stopping points along the way, contributing programmes that present architecture and spaces in a new light. Check the programme in advance to plan your route through the city.
