Sorø museum of art

A time travel in art and culture
On the main street of the historical market town, old and new blends elegantly in the beautiful, protected building that houses Sorø Kunstmuseum. The museum opened its doors to the public for the first time in 1943 in Sorø Academy’s estate manager’s residence from 1832. In November 2011, the museum opened with a new extension by Danish architects Lundgaard & Tranberg.

The extension is a great example of how modern architecture adds to historic buildings with respect for the history and the existing surroundings. And just like the architecture, Sorø Kunstmuseum’s exhibitions also span wide historically. 300 years of Danish art from Holberg's era over the Golden Age and modernism to contemporary art.

A collection of the greatest names in art history is represented in the museum's collection, e.g. Thorvaldsen, Abildgaard, Juel, Eckersberg, Lundbye, Skovgaard, Ancher, Giersing, Swane, Kirkeby and Eliasson. In addition, Sorø Kunstmuseum has a unique collection of Russian icons.
