At Træsmeden in Gudhjem, Hans-Henning Pedersen works with wood in a way where the material itself almost has the final say. Here, Bornholm craftsmanship is created in the meeting point between human hands and nature’s own will.

He often uses freshly felled, twisted wood – not the perfect and straight pieces, but those with the most character. The wood is shaped into a simple form and then allowed to dry and evolve as it wishes. Along the way, changes appear that cannot be planned, but which give the works their unique expression.

For Hans-Henning Pedersen, the work is about understanding and respecting the material rather than controlling it. In the drying process and the slow transformations, the wood reveals its forms – and sometimes something completely unexpected emerges.
