Accessible shelter at Skarresø near Jyderup

On the shore of Skarresø, one of western Zealand’s most beautiful lakes, you will find a shelter designed with accessibility in mind. The shelter is wheelchair-friendly, making it possible for everyone to experience a night outdoors — regardless of mobility. Access is via gravel paths from the car park on Slagelsevej, and it is approximately 200 metres from the car to the shelter.

Skarresø is one of the larger lakes in Holbæk Municipality, surrounded by dense deciduous forest and rolling moraine landscape. The shelter itself is set in peaceful surroundings with views of the lake, and you quickly sense that you have left the noise of everyday life behind. The spot is perfect for those seeking a simple overnight stay close to the water — and thanks to its accessible design, it is one of the few places in the area where you can sleep outdoors without worrying about accessibility.

Nature at Skarresø

Skarresø stretches like an elongated mirror through the hilly landscape west of Jyderup. The forest surrounding the lake is old and varied, with beech, oak and alder, and the paths along the shore offer changing views across the water. In spring, wood anemones bloom beneath the trees, and in summer you can hear the nightingale singing from the thickets by the lakeside.

The lake itself is rich in birdlife — coot, grey heron and little grebe are regular residents, and with a little patience you may also spot kingfishers along the water’s edge. The terrain around the shelter is relatively flat, and the gravel path makes it possible to access the site by wheelchair, though one should be mindful during wet periods when the path may be soft.

Jyderup and surroundings — experiences within reach

Jyderup is centrally located in the western part of Holbæk Municipality, with good connections to both Holbæk and Kalundborg. From the shelter, it is a short distance to the centre of Jyderup, where you will find shops and cafés. The path network around Skarresø is part of a larger hiking route system, and you can walk the entire way around the lake on a pleasant day trip.

To the west lies Tissø, Zealand’s fourth-largest lake and a Natura 2000 area with outstanding birdlife. Sagnlandet Lejre and Sjællands Odde are also within reasonable driving distance. Families with children can try fishing in the lake — Skarresø is home to perch, pike and bream among others — and the quiet morning hours by the water are an experience in themselves.
