A Window to the Birdlife at Skarresø

Halfway between Jyderup and Mørkøv, hidden behind a dense thicket of willows and alders, lies one of West Zealand's finest spots for birdwatching. The bird hide at Skarresø lets you get remarkably close to the lake's rich birdlife — without causing any disturbance. Here you sit sheltered behind wooden panels with narrow observation openings, while herons, great crested grebes and coots go about their business just metres away.

Skarresø is one of the larger lakes in Holbæk Municipality and has been an important staging area for migratory birds for decades. The lake sits in an undulating moraine landscape with beech forests on the slopes and reedbeds along the shoreline. It is precisely the reeds that make this place so rich in birdlife — they provide cover and nesting opportunities for species like marsh harrier, reed bunting and water rail, which can otherwise be difficult to spot.

A Hide Built for Stillness

The bird hide itself is a simple timber structure with benches and elongated viewing slits at the right height. It is designed so you can sit for long periods and observe without being detected by the birds. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope and you have the best possible conditions for studying behaviour at close range. Early mornings and dusk bring the greatest activity — especially during spring and autumn migration, when impressive flocks of geese and ducks rest on the lake.

Access to the bird hide is via a short path from Slagelsevej near Jyderup. The trail is surrounded by old deciduous woodland and can be muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is advisable. The walk from the car park takes only a few minutes, yet it feels like stepping into another world — traffic noise fades away and birdsong takes over.

Skarresø and Its Surroundings

Skarresø covers approximately 48 hectares and reaches depths of up to 18 metres. The lake is surrounded by a varied landscape of fields, woodland and small villages. To the west stretches the Åmose lowland, while to the east the hills of Jyderup rise above the flat lake terrain. This provides a varied outlook from the hide — you see not only birds but also a landscape shaped by the Ice Age.

For those who want to combine birdwatching with a longer walk, you can follow the paths around the lake or continue to the nearby Skarresø shelter site, where overnight stays in nature are also possible. The town of Jyderup is within easy walking distance and offers shops and places to eat.

Holbæk Municipality is rich in outdoor experiences, and the Skarresø area makes an excellent starting point. To the north you can visit Tølløse Deer Park with its free-roaming red deer, and to the south paths lead down to Åmosen — one of Northern Europe's largest wetland areas.
