The Hill at Kongskilde – views across Tystrup Lake and the moraine landscape

At Kongskilde Nature Centre the terrain rises in a striking ridge known locally as Bjerget (the Mountain). From here one of the finest views in Sorø Municipality opens up – across the smooth surface of Tystrup Lake and the rolling moraine landscape shaped by ice more than ten thousand years ago. It is the kind of place where you stop, breathe deeply, and take it all in before walking on.

Ice Age landscape up close

The hill is an excellent example of the landscape the Ice Age left behind on central Zealand. The moraine hills around Kongskilde are among the most undulating on Zealand, and from the top of the ridge you can clearly read how the glaciers pushed and deposited material layer upon layer. The terrain does not spare your legs – but it rewards the effort with wide views and the feeling of standing in the middle of geological history.

Kongskilde as a starting point

The hill lies right next to Kongskilde Nature Centre, which is housed in an old watermill and serves as a starting point for walks along Tystrup Lake. From the centre you can follow marked trails in several directions – along the lakeshore, through the forest or over the hills. The combination of nature, geology and interpretation makes the Kongskilde area one of the most complete outdoor areas in Sorø Municipality.

Flora and fauna on the slopes

The south-facing slopes of the hill have a particularly warm and dry character, providing space for different vegetation than the surrounding forest. Heat-loving plants and insects thrive here, and on sunny days you can encounter butterflies and wild bees in numbers that surprise so close to dense woodland. In spring, anemones bloom on the forest floor below while the hilltop itself stays open and grassy.

The Kongskilde area offers far more than the view from the hill. The nature centre has a free exhibition on the area's natural and cultural history. Along Tystrup Lake you can walk trails that pass shelters and primitive tent sites. The Suså river is within short distance and offers canoe and kayak trips. Sorø town lies to the north with the Abbey Church, the Academy Garden and Sorø Lake, and Suserup Forest – one of Denmark's oldest untouched forests – is just a short drive away. Practical information

The Hill at Kongskilde is freely accessible all year round. Park at Kongskilde Nature Centre on Skælskørvej 34 and follow the paths up the hill. The terrain is hilly and can be slippery in wet weather, so good footwear is recommended. The spot is suited both for a short excursion and as part of a longer walk in the Tystrup area.
