The Bridge over the Suså – Path through the Suså Valley at Kongsgaarden

Below the old Kongsgaarden in Vester Broby, an atmospheric path leads through the Suså valley and across the Bridge over the Suså – a footbridge and cycle bridge connecting the municipalities of Sorø and Næstved at the old crossing point between Vester Broby and Næsby. The trail is the result of many years of work and came about in cooperation between the two municipalities, foundations and local organisations.
The route leads down through the beautiful river valley and out across the meadows by the Suså – the largest and very water-rich river of Zealand. Because the meadows are flooded for most of the winter, a boardwalk on poles has been built across the wet terrain, so you can cross the wet landscape with dry feet.
It is a genuine path, not a wide, stable gravel trail, so bring sturdy, waterproof footwear. In return you are rewarded with a very beautiful walk through the river valley and across the wide Suså itself. The bridge has benches along both sides, so you can take a well-earned rest in the middle of the river and enjoy the view.
The trail is primarily for walkers, but riders and cyclists may also use the path, boardwalk and bridge – as long as you show consideration for one another and walk bikes and horses across the bridge itself. The Suså is used for canoeing and kayaking almost all year round, and there is plenty of room to paddle under the bridge.
The area lies within the protected Tystrup-Bavelse of some 3,000 hectares – part of Tystrup-Bavelse Nature Park – with a rich animal and plant life. The European long-distance path E6 passes close by through Vester Broby, and Kongsgaarden above offers both a farm museum and primitive overnight accommodation in a hostel.
