The coal bridge Kulbroen
Take a trip to Kulbroen (the coal bridge ) in Aarhus and experience the city's historic South Harbour from a whole new angle! Climb up to a height of eight metres on the old bridge and enjoy the amazing view of the area. From a previously run-down industrial neighbourhood, the South Harbour has transformed into a burgeoning new district, and Kulbroen gives you the opportunity to see this transformation with your own eyes.
From coal to (re)creativity
The coal bridge was built in 1950 to transport coal from ships in the harbour to Aarhus Gasworks. Today there is neither coal nor gasworks, but the bridge is still there. And on top of it you'll find the viewing platform. From here you can look out over a neighbourhood where the historic soul of the coal bridge interacts with an area that will be home to both recreation and creative industries.
The Coal Bridge, for example, consists of no less than 17 different FSC-certified tropical tree species, and the aim is for the viewing platform to inspire sustainable thinking.
Inspiration from New York and Paris
The inspiration for the transformation of Kulbroen and Sydhavnen comes from metropolises. Inspired by New York's High Line Park and Paris' Promenade Plantée, both of which utilise disused railway tracks, the plan is to connect Sydhavnen with Frederiksplads and Aarhus Central Station and create even easier access to the area.
The Coal Bridge is free to visit and is open during daytime hours.
