Who was Echo?

In Greek mythology, Echo was a mountain nymph known as the embodiment of the echo itself. According to the legend, she was punished by the goddess Hera and lost the ability to speak freely. From then on, she could only repeat the words of others. Later, she fell in love with the beautiful Narcissus, but when her feelings were not returned, she gradually faded away until only her voice remained.

In Aksel Hansen's sculpture, Echo is portrayed wandering through the woods while calling out for Narcissus. The figure's delicate and almost ethereal appearance reflects the tragic fate that awaits her.

Aksel Hansen and the sculpture

The sculpture was created by Odense-born artist Aksel Hansen (1853-1933), one of the most prolific Danish sculptors of his era. He began his career as a woodcarver and stonemason before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Over time, his work developed from a naturalistic style towards Art Nouveau.

Echo was cast in bronze in 1888 but did not arrive in Eventyrhaven until decades later. The sculpture was donated by physician Poul Guitdal, and an original plaster model is preserved at the Brandts Art Museum.

Many visitors come to Eventyrhaven to enjoy its peaceful green surroundings, but the park is also home to several noteworthy sculptures. Installed in 1932, Echo was the first sculpture to be placed in Eventyrhaven.

Over the years, more artworks have been added, including the H.C. Andersen statue, The Paper Boat, Standing Girl and The Cuckoo Chick. Together, they help create a unique outdoor gallery where art, history and storytelling come together in the heart of Odense.
