A Romanesque village church near Sabro

Fårup Church is situated in the village of Fårup, east of Sabro and approximately 11 km west of Aarhus. The church dates back to the 12th century, when the Romanesque chancel and nave were built from granite blocks and fieldstones.

Around the year 1500, the church was extended westwards. The present tower was added in 1880, when an older, dilapidated tower was replaced by the Neo-Romanesque tower built of red brick.

See the frescoes from 1492

Inside Fårup Church, you can admire an extensive collection of frescoes dating from 1492. The frescoes were uncovered during a major restoration in the 1950s.

Among the motifs, you will find a rare depiction of the church’s presumed patron saint, St Dionysius, who is shown holding his severed head in his hand.
