Fræer Church

Fræer Church is a Romanesque church with a chancel and nave dating from the 12th century. The church also has a bell from the same period, while the porch, tower and vaults date from the Gothic period.

Several Romanesque windows have been preserved, although they are all bricked up today. The tower was built around the year 1500 using reused ashlar blocks and bricks.

In the south wall of the chancel, you can see a funnel-shaped, round granite stone, which is believed to be a piscina. In Catholic times, a piscina was used to lead baptismal water down into the floor.

The pulpit dates from 1593 and bears the coats of arms of Niels Mouridsen Brenderup and Maren Høeg of Tustrup. The ashlar-built altar table with a reliquary cavity probably dates from the Romanesque period and is covered by wooden panelling from the 17th century.

The altarpiece is a painting from 1949 by Rud-Petersen and is a copy of the artist’s own altarpiece from 1939 for Oue Church. An earlier altarpiece painting from 1898 by Axel Hou now hangs in the tower room behind the organ.

The altarpiece and much of the church’s other interior furnishings were donated by parishioners.
