H.C. Andersen’s original gravestone
Experience H.C. Andersen’s original gravestone at the H.C. Andersen House in Odense – a new and thought-provoking dimension in the story of the poet’s life and death.
A special addition to the H.C. Andersen House
The H.C. Andersen House in Odense now offers a new and unique experience: the poet’s original gravestone from Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen is now part of the museum’s exhibition. Hidden from the public for many years, the gravestone has been loaned by the City of Copenhagen and now plays a central role in telling the story of Andersen’s life – and death.
A gravestone filled with poetry and history
The red Nexø sandstone marked Andersen’s grave from 1875 until it was damaged in 1983 and later replaced with a replica. The original stone holds special significance, not least because it bears four lines from the poem The Old Man, in which Andersen reflects on the immortality of the soul. It has now been carefully preserved and is displayed in a newly dedicated section of the museum.
An experience rich in historical meaning
Seeing H.C. Andersen’s gravestone up close in his hometown creates a powerful connection between beginning and end. The combination of his childhood home and the object that marks the end of his life offers a unique insight into the full person behind the name. This exhibition is part of a broader commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the poet’s death and reinforces the museum’s role as an international hub for the story of H.C. Andersen.
