This day trip is the perfect recipe for a child-friendly day out, where curiosity sets the pace rather than the number of kilometres.

Whether you prefer quiet moments by the water’s edge, fun on two wheels or a well-earned packed lunch break by the lighthouse, Enebærodde is a wonderful base.

Below, you will find all the practical information you need to turn an ordinary walk into a cosy expedition for the whole family.

Quick overview

  • Who is the trip suitable for: The whole family. The route can be shortened as needed.
  • Time needed: 2–4 hours, depending on whether you walk to the lighthouse or only visit the woods.
  • Pram: Yes, the main path is a good gravel road and easy to use.
  • Dog: Must be kept on a lead. Take care around the free-roaming cattle.
  • Facilities: Public toilet at the car park by Halshusene/Tygesvej.
  • Snacks and packed lunches: You can buy supplies for the trip in Otterup, only 8 km away. Pick up takeaway from Café Den Gamle Bager, treats from Ostehuset or shop at the supermarkets in Otterup, several of which have their own bakery and deli counter.

➡️ What to see and do on the trip

We recommend that you do not rush to complete the full route. Enebærodde is best when you take your time, stop along the way, feel the wind and look for the small hidden details in the landscape.

Turn the walk into a game with stops along the way:

  • Go hunting for “the black dragon”: Enebærodde is known for its many adders, especially the rare black ones. They are not dangerous if you leave them alone, but it is a fun challenge to see who can spot one first as it suns itself in the heather.
  • Meet the large Galloway cattle: Huge cattle roam freely on the spit. They help keep the landscape in good condition. Remember to keep your distance and enjoy the sight of the calm animals.
  • Bring packed lunches and eat by the lighthouse: After 6 km, you reach the outer tip. Here stands the iconic white and green lighthouse from 1869. From here, you can watch the ships sail through “Gabet” – the narrow entrance to Odense Fjord, where the current is so strong that the water swirls.
  • Find the old earthworks: Next to the lighthouse are the remains of fortifications from the English Wars. In the past, soldiers stood here with cannons, ready to protect Funen from enemy ships.

You can also choose to end the trip by eating your packed lunches by the woods and coastal area close to Martinegården in the middle of the spit, where it is peaceful and cosy, with a lovely view.

4 fun ways to enjoy the route

Playing together is always fun, and Enebærodde is a huge playground for curious children.

You do not need to be experienced hikers to have a great day – try one of these activities:

  • Become beach detectives by the fjord: On the calm side facing Odense Fjord, there is plenty of life in the shallow water. Take off your shoes and look down between the stones. Here you can find funny barnacles catching food with their tiny arms and see whether you can spot a small sand goby or viviparous eelpout hiding away. Also look out for the beautiful coloured seaweed, such as blood-red red algae or large sugar kelp swaying in the current.
  • Bring your bikes: The full route around the spit is about 12 km. Because the path is completely flat, car-free and easy to follow, it is the perfect place for children to try a “long ride” on their own bike for the first time.
  • Create your own beach art: Along the Kattegat side, there is plenty of fine sand. Find a good stick and see who can draw the biggest sea monster or the finest lighthouse in the sand. It is fun to see how long the artwork lasts before the next waves wash the canvas clean again.
  • Make the trip even more fun with nature bingo: Turn the walk into a competition and see what you can find. Print VisitNordfyn’s nature bingo sheets at home and bring them with you. Who will fill their sheet first? Find the sheets at visitnordfyn.com/naturebingo.

Practical information for the trip

  • Parking: Park at the large car park by Halshusene, Tygesvej, 5450 Otterup. This is where the trip begins.
  • Remember water and snacks: There are no shops on the spit itself, so remember to fill your rucksack.
  • Walk or cycle: The full route around the spit is about 12 km. It is a fantastic cycling route for children, as it is completely flat and car-free.
  • Swimming safety: Be careful! At the tip by “Gabet”, the current is extremely dangerous. Swim instead at the lovely sandy beach Hofmansgave Strand, right by the car park.
  • Toilet: There is a public toilet at the car park by Halshusene/Tygesvej. The toilet is open all year round.

With the practical details sorted and your rucksack full of snacks, you are ready for Denmark’s narrowest spit of land.

We hope you have a wonderful trip out into the blue.
