Vibrant musical presence, ambient soundscapes and strong melodies come together when the trio Hvalfugl takes the stage. Jonathan Fjord Bredholt’s elegant piano figures and atmospheric harmonium textures intertwine with Jeppe Lavsen’s crystalline guitar themes and Anders Juel Bomholt’s gently swaying double bass. Their interplay creates both cohesion and a wealth of detail.

Hvalfugl is a trio from Aarhus whose music is characterized by a vibrant presence, ambient soundscapes and lyrical melodies. Since their debut in 2017, the trio has developed a sound that moves freely between genres. Hvalfugl combines seamless interplay with dreamy ambient music and unhurried musical passages in which melodies slowly unfold for the listener.

The trio consists of Jonathan Fjord Bredholt (piano and harmonium), Jeppe Lavsen (guitar) and Anders Juel Bomholt (double bass). Their interplay balances warm acoustic sounds with subtle use of effects, creating a musical expression that is both intimate and insistent.

As a live band, Hvalfugl invites the audience into a musical universe in which the compositions intertwine into continuous passages. In 2025, the trio received the Live Act of the Year award at DMA Jazz.

Their first three albums, By (2017), Som En Faldskærm (2019) and Øjeblikke Vi Husker (2020), laid the foundation for their dreamy, atmospheric sound. On the double LP Bag Vore Øjne Strømmer Drømme Sagte Forbi (2025), Hvalfugl brings together three years of work and EP releases in a single work. New musical ideas and guest musicians add further elements to the trio’s expression.
