A young forest beside Roskilde
Hyrdehøj Forest is a young woodland on the edge of Roskilde, west of Copenhagen. It was established through cooperation between the municipality and the Danish Nature Agency. The larger eastern part was planted in 1991 and the western part in 2001. It forms part of the green ring of countryside around Roskilde.
Paths and outdoor fitness
A network of paths makes it possible to explore the forest on foot. Gravel roads and paths offer options for visitors with pushchairs or mobility aids, although surfaces and access vary. An outdoor fitness route with four exercise stations and three marked running routes add opportunities for an active visit. Information boards help you find your way.
Visiting with a dog
Dogs are welcome. In the enclosed dog exercise area they may be off the lead when kept under control. Elsewhere in the forest, keep your dog on a lead and show consideration for wildlife and other visitors.
A meal or a night in the forest
The forest has a covered fire hut. Bring firewood or charcoal and follow any local fire restrictions. Simple tent camping is permitted in designated wooded areas under the Danish Nature Agency’s rules for sleeping outside. The scheme called fri teltning allows small tents for a short stay; it does not mean that camping is permitted anywhere.
