Cycling through the Ice Age landscape from Nykøbing Sjælland to Holbæk

The Istidsruten (Ice Age Route) is one of Zealand's most spectacular cycling experiences, and the first stage takes you from Nykøbing Sjælland to Holbæk through a landscape shaped by enormous glaciers more than 20,000 years ago. Over the 44.6 kilometres you pass some of Northwest Zealand's most striking geological formations – dead ice holes, terminal moraines and tunnel valleys that bear witness to the wild forces of the Ice Age. This is a route where you quite literally cycle on historic ground.

UNESCO Global Geopark Odsherred

The big draw of this stage is the passage through UNESCO Global Geopark Odsherred, one of the few places in the world where the Ice Age landscape is so clearly visible and well-preserved that it has gained international recognition. The soft ridges and deep valleys tell a geological story stretching far back in time. The landscape constantly shifts character – from open fields with sweeping views to small intimate valleys where the road winds between green slopes. Along the Isefjord coastline

A large part of the route follows the coastline of the Isefjord, adding a very special dimension to the ride. The fjord opens up with calm water and low islets, and on still days the sky mirrors itself in the surface. In spring and autumn you may spot large flocks of migratory birds resting along the coast, while the summer months offer the chance for a refreshing dip from one of the many small beaches along the route. The combination of coastal scenery and Ice Age terrain makes this stage unique – there are not many places in Denmark where geology and fjord nature merge in quite this way.

A route for all types of cyclists

The first stage of the Ice Age Route primarily follows quiet country roads and paths well suited to both fitness cyclists and families with children. The terrain is undulating, as you would expect in an Ice Age landscape, but the gradients are manageable, and the reward is panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. GPS navigation makes it easy to find your way – GPX files are available for download so you always know where you are on the route. Along the way you pass through cosy villages where you can stop and enjoy a packed lunch or find a local supply point.

Practical information and facilities

The route starts in Nykøbing Sjælland, easily accessible by public transport, and ends in Holbæk, which also has good train connections. This makes it possible to ride the stage as a one-way trip without worrying about transporting your car. Along the route you will find rest areas, benches and in several cases shelters if you wish to combine the ride with an overnight stay under the open sky. It is a route that invites you to take your time and let the landscape sink in.
