Ingo Meller - Opening reception

Paintings that feel both rigorous and raw—as if they balance between the meaningful and the utterly banal. Ingo Meller works with oil on canvas and Tyvek, mounted directly on the wall so that the material and motif stand out sharply.

On Saturday, September 5, you can attend the opening reception and view works by Ingo Meller, an artist who focuses on the tension between content and material in painting. His paintings do something quite daring: they insist on meaning while pointing out how “simple” they really are, constructed of canvas, paint, and brushstrokes.

Meller paints with oil on canvas and Tyvek, and the works are placed directly on the wall, which pushes the painting away from the classic, framed idea of a “finished work” and toward something more direct and physical. Here, both the value of the image and its everyday materiality become visible at the same time: the grand and the banal side by side.

Ingo Meller graduated from Cologne University of Applied Sciences, where he studied under Stefan Wewerka, Daniel Spoerri, and Eduardo Paolozzi, among others. He has worked as a freelance artist in Berlin, New York, and Cologne, and from 2004 to 2021 he was a professor of painting at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, where he also lives and works. His works have been exhibited internationally at Galerie Nordenhake (Berlin/Stockholm), Cheim & Read (New York), Museum Folkwang (Essen), Hamburger Kunsthalle, and CCNOA in Brussels, among others.

The exhibition is open from September 5 to November 22.
