Shore Fishing at Reersø Rev – One of West Zealand's Top Fishing Spots

Along the coastline of Reersø, a natural reef stretches out into the Great Belt like a stone pier, and it is right here that some of West Zealand's most dedicated anglers gather. Shore fishing at Reersø Rev is well known among locals and visiting fishermen for its strong tidal currents and varied seabed terrain, attracting sea trout, garfish and flatfish throughout much of the year.

The Reef – Where Currents Gather the Fish

Reersø Rev extends several hundred metres from the shore, creating a natural transition between shallow and deep water. The powerful current flowing across the reef carries food and baitfish over the rocky banks, turning the spot into a natural feeding ground for predatory fish. Sea trout in particular patrol the reef edge regularly, and experienced anglers know that a well-placed cast along the current line often yields results. The bottom alternates between seaweed, rocks and sandy patches, and this variety allows fishing with spinners, spoons and fly gear depending on conditions.

The Rhythm of the Seasons

Spring brings the first garfish into shallow water, and from April to June the reef is an ideal place to catch them on light tackle. The garfish hunt in shoals close to the surface, and on a good day you can spot them leaping after baitfish right near the shoreline. In summer the focus shifts to night fishing for sea trout – the warm summer evenings when the sun sets over the Great Belt are among the most atmospheric experiences an angler can have on Zealand. Autumn and winter mark peak season for bright sea trout moving close to shore to feed on sand hoppers and shrimp in the cool water.

Ten Kilometres of Coastline with Possibilities

The reef itself is the highlight, but Reersø's total coastline of roughly ten kilometres offers several additional fishing spots. Both north and south of the peninsula you will find calm stretches with sandbars and seaweed where flatfish such as flounder and plaice hide. Here you can fish with bottom rigs and worm bait, and these spots are well suited for children and beginners who want to try shore fishing in sheltered surroundings.

Peaceful and Uncrowded

Reersø sits as a small peninsula in the Great Belt, roughly 25 kilometres west of Slagelse within Kalundborg Municipality. The village has preserved its rural charm with half-timbered houses, a small harbour and a few hundred permanent residents. Access to the shore along the reef is free, and parking is available nearby. Unlike many other well-known fishing spots on Zealand, Reersø is rarely crowded, and you can often have long stretches of coastline entirely to yourself – even during peak season.

Experiences in the Area

Once the fishing gear is packed away, there is good reason to linger on Reersø a while longer. The small peninsula offers scenic coastal walks with views across the Great Belt and Sprøgø, and birdlife is abundant with waders, eider ducks and white-tailed eagles regularly seen circling above the water. In Kalundborg you can explore the Viking fortress Trelleborg and the medieval five-towered church, and along the coast to the south lie several fine beaches.
