An observation tower in the new forest north of Kalundborg

Just four kilometres from the centre of Kalundborg, Klosterskov Nord stands as one of the municipality's newest nature areas. The forest was planted between 2000 and 2003 on former farmland, and in just over twenty years it has developed into a diverse landscape where young deciduous and coniferous trees alternate with open meadows, small lakes and heath-like areas. In the middle of it all stands an observation tower offering wide views across the mosaic of habitats and the surrounding moraine landscape towards Kalundborg Fjord.

Intentionally wild — two thirds open landscape

What makes Klosterskov Nord special is that around two thirds of its 60 hectares have been deliberately kept as light-open areas. Lakes, meadows and heathland dominate, and it is precisely this variety that attracts rich birdlife and a flora rarely found in conventional production forest. From the tower, early risers can spot roe deer grazing on the meadows, and in spring the air fills with skylark song above the open fields. Naturstyrelsen Midtsjælland manages the area and designed the forest from the outset to let nature itself set the course.

Close to town, deep in nature

Klosterskov Nord lies east of the slightly older Klosterskov Syd, which was planted in 1996-97. Together the two forests cover more than a hundred hectares, forming a continuous green belt north of Kalundborg. Access is easy — from Kalundborg centre it is a short drive along Klosterskovvej, with parking available at the forest edge. The terrain is flat to gently undulating, and the paths suit a relaxed walk at a moderate pace.

Nature and wildlife year-round

The small lakes in Klosterskov Nord attract amphibians and dragonflies in summer, while the open areas provide space for wildflowers and butterflies. Dogs are welcome on a lead, and visitors are free to bring their own picnic — the forest has fire pits for grilling, though firewood must be brought along. It is the kind of place where you take your time: pack a rucksack, find a quiet spot by one of the lakes and let nature come to you.

From Klosterskov Nord it is a short distance to Kalundborg town with its Viking fortress, five-towered church and waterfront.
