The Living Summer at Hjerl Hede Open-Air Museum is one of the largest historical summer experiences in Central and Western Jutland.
From 26 June to 9 August 2026, the museum transforms into a living portrayal of Danish everyday life as it once was – far removed from today’s technology and fast-paced world.
Here, visitors move through farmsteads, workshops, and historic homes where history is not only told, but actively brought to life.
Volunteers in historical costumes demonstrate traditional crafts and techniques, showing how blacksmiths, bakers, dairy workers, and many others carried out their daily work. Throughout the site, you meet people who share stories about life in a time shaped by hard work, strong communities, and resilience.
Life in the past – hardship and solidarity
The summer also highlights the more challenging sides of history. The exhibition in the visitor centre, along with H.A. Brendekilde’s painting “Udslidt”, offers a powerful insight into a life where energy often ran out, and where illness, poor harvests, and economic crises placed heavy pressure on families. At the same time, it tells stories of solidarity, adaptability, and endurance.
During your visit, you experience a living open-air museum where animals, fields, and historical environments create an authentic atmosphere. Both children and adults can take part in activities, watch traditional crafts being demonstrated, and try old games and everyday tasks.
The Living Summer at Hjerl Hede is a sensory journey through time, bringing you closer to Danish history and showing how life has developed over centuries. It is an experience that connects generations and brings the past to life in the heart of the West Jutland landscape.
