From Lake to Stars — a Hike Between Maglesø and Brorfelde

The trail connecting Maglesø and Brorfelde Observatory is one of the longer walks in Holbæk Municipality, linking two of central Zealand's most distinctive landscapes: the hilly woodland around the glacial lake Maglesø and the open ridge at Brorfelde, where Denmark's historic observatory commands views across much of western Zealand. At 15 kilometres the route delivers everything from dense beech forest and ravines to wide-open farmland and sweeping panoramas — rewarding anyone willing to walk the full distance.

Maglesø and the Zealandic Alps

The walk starts at Maglesøvej near Tølløse, where a small car park sits at the forest edge. From here the path descends toward Maglesø, a clear glacial lake surrounded by steep slopes and old beech forest. The area is known as the Zealandic Alps, and the rolling hills earn the nickname — the climbs are noticeable, and the terrain alternates between ridgetops with views and deep hollows where sunlight barely filters through the canopy. The lake itself stretches roughly 800 metres and carries a particular stillness, especially early in the day before other walkers arrive.

Through Forest and Open Country

From Maglesø the route heads northwest through the woodland and out into the agricultural landscape that separates the lake from the Brorfelde ridge. The transition from dense forest to open fields is one of the walk's strongest moments — the landscape suddenly opens up and you can see far across the undulating fields toward the horizon. The path follows farm tracks and narrow trails along hedgerows and field boundaries. In spring wild elder and hawthorn bloom along the route. Along the way you pass small villages and farms scattered across the hilly terrain that has been cultivated for centuries.

Brorfelde Observatory — Science with a View

Brorfelde Observatory sits on one of Zealand's highest points, a good 100 metres above sea level. Built in 1953 by the University of Copenhagen, it served for decades as Denmark's foremost astronomical research station. Today it has been transformed into a nature and science centre where visitors can explore the night sky, astronomy and the distinctive flora that thrives on the chalky hills around the observatory. The view from the top is striking — on clear days you can see all the way to the Great Belt Bridge and the island of Samsø. For families Brorfelde makes a worthwhile destination in its own right, but as a turning point on a hike it adds a dimension the walk would otherwise lack.

Practical Information

The route covers 15 kilometres in total and can be walked as an out-and-back from Maglesøvej or as a point-to-point with transport arranged at both ends. The terrain is hilly with several notable climbs, and the surface alternates between woodland path, farm track and gravel road. Allow five to six hours for the full walk including breaks. Sturdy walking shoes are essential — the forest section in particular can be slippery after rain. Tølløse railway station on the Holbæk–Slagelse line is roughly four kilometres from the starting point, reachable via quiet country roads.

Experiences in the Area

The countryside between Tølløse and Holbæk offers plenty beyond the trail itself. Naturpark Åmosen stretches to the southwest with boardwalks and bird hides spanning one of northern Europe's largest raised bogs. Holbæk town has a charming harbour and a museum quarter of half-timbered merchants' houses dating from the 1600s. Bicycles can be hired in Holbæk for exploring the many quiet lanes and paths connecting the villages in the area.
