In the footsteps of Martin Andersen Nexø in the heart of Nexø

In the charming streets of Nexø, you will find Andersen Nexøs Hus, named after Bornholm’s famous author Martin Andersen Nexø (1869–1954). The small museum offers an insight into the writer’s life and tells the story of the boy who grew up on Bornholm and later became one of Denmark’s most celebrated authors.

Martin Andersen Nexø was born in Copenhagen but moved to Nexø with his family at the age of eight, spending much of his childhood and youth on Bornholm. In the museum, you can experience how he lived from the age of 13 and learn more about his upbringing, everyday life and life in the small island town. The museum also tells the story of the works that made Martin Andersen Nexø known far beyond Denmark’s borders, including Pelle the Conqueror and Ditte, Child of Man, both regarded today as classics of Danish literature.

A cosy break in Nexø

Behind the old sandstone wall, you will find a small lush garden that invites visitors to enjoy a quiet break, especially on warm summer days. A visit to Andersen Nexøs Hus can easily be combined with a stroll through Nexø’s charming streets, small shops and atmospheric harbour area – perhaps ending the day with an ice cream by the harbour while enjoying life in one of Bornholm’s oldest market towns.
