MIND Museum tells the Danish history of psychiatry through patients, relatives and staff

The building once housed patients from the women's ward of the psychiatric hospital in Middelfart. The hospital opened in 1888 and was in operation until 1999. Now MIND opens here: Denmark's new museum on mental illness and mental wellbeing.

Mental illness affects close to half a million Danes and many more relatives. Yet the history has long been hidden away. MIND opens it up. With Denmark's largest psychiatric history collection, over 100 years of history on treatment, perceptions of illness and everyday life are told – through the voices of patients, relatives and staff. The exhibitions connect past with present. The rooms invite dialogue, togetherness and reflection.

MIND opens in May 2026 in Teglgårdsparken in Middelfart.

The museum is approx. 1,500 square metres and holds the largest psychiatric history collection in Denmark. MIND shows objects from former psychiatric hospitals across the whole of Region of Southern Denmark – Augustenborg, Hviding and Middelfart – and includes, alongside the exhibitions, a sensory garden where you can walk barefoot and feel different textures, as well as a garden decorated with artworks from the Danish Arts Foundation. MIND is not just a museum – it is an active meeting place for everyone who wants to know more about mental illness and mental wellbeing.

Tip: End your visit in the park around the museum – with the sensory garden, Playground and space for a picnic.
