A few thousand years ago, the meadow was a lake that encircled Påøen to the north and west.

Påø marshes near Skovsgaard is one of many areas where a great effort has been made to improve the enviroment for the bird life on Langeland. The water level of the marshes has been raised so that, when standing on Kågårdsvej, you have a fine view to many nesting birds.
