Romanesque church in the heart of Rødding

Rødding Church is situated in the heart of Rødding, a good eight kilometres north-east of Viborg. This Romanesque village church, which is more than 800 years old, is the town’s oldest building, and the granite blocks in the chancel and nave bear witness to the church’s earliest history.

Medieval traces inside and out

In the late Middle Ages, the church was fitted with a tower, a porch and a vaulted ceiling in the chancel. From the outside, you can see the difference between the older parts of the building and the whitewashed newer sections.

On the north side of the church is a chequerboard stone, and the churchyard contains older gravestones.

Baroque art and historical furnishings

Inside the church, you will find a rich collection of furnishings linked to Sødal Manor. The altarpiece from the late 1730s depicts the Crucifixion, and the pulpit from 1646 features biblical reliefs.

The church also houses pew backs from the 17th century, paintings of the apostles from the mid-18th century and an embroidered antependium believed to date from the late 14th century.
