Rullehøj on Røsnæs — 60 Metres Above the Great Belt

Right at the tip of the Røsnæs peninsula, where the West Zealand landscape plunges dramatically towards the sea, Rullehøj rises a good 60 metres above sea level. A Landscape Shaped by the Ice Age

Røsnæs is a peninsula jutting almost ten kilometres into the Great Belt northwest of Kalundborg. Rullehøj sits at the peninsula's highest point, and the terrain around the hilltop is characterised by dry grasslands with short grass, wild herbs, and scattered hawthorn thickets. Layers of History Underfoot

Rullehøj carries more than just geology. The site is named after an ancient Bronze Age burial mound, and for generations the hill has played a part in the area's history. King Valdemar the Victorious features in the stories connected to Røsnæs, and the peninsula served for centuries as a strategic lookout over the Great Belt. During the German Occupation, the Wehrmacht used Røsnæs as a surveillance station, and remnants of military installations from the Second World War can still be traced in the landscape. During the Cold War, the peninsula was in play once again — this time as part of NATO's monitoring of the eastern Baltic. Layers of history lie quite literally underfoot as you walk the paths to the summit.

Nature on Røsnæs

Røsnæs is designated a Natura 2000 site and harbours a remarkable biodiversity for such a relatively small area. The dry grasslands rank among the most species-rich in West Zealand, with wild orchids, thyme, and a long list of rare butterflies. Roe deer and hares are regularly spotted along the trails, and birdlife above the coastal slopes is plentiful — buzzards and kestrels often circle above the hills. The Danish Nature Agency manages most of the peninsula's natural areas, and a network of walking trails leads from the car parks on Røsnæsvej through the grasslands and up to Rullehøj.

Getting There

Rullehøj is located in the western part of the Røsnæs peninsula in Kalundborg Municipality, roughly 15 kilometres from Kalundborg town centre. Park along Røsnæsvej and follow the marked trails up the hill. The walk from the car park to the top takes around 15–20 minutes at a leisurely pace and is manageable for most, though the final stretch is a touch steep. There are no facilities at the summit itself — no benches or signs — but the unspoilt character is part of the appeal. Bring a thermos and enjoy your coffee with a view across half of Zealand.
