From coast to forest in Slagelse Municipality

The West Zealand section of Sjællandsleden starts at the Great Belt coast, where the route follows the old coastlines south of Korsør. From here you move inland through a hilly moraine landscape with small villages and sweeping fields. The stretch between Korsør and Skælskør offers views across Agersø Sound, and you can often hear the sea long after you have left the coast behind. Further east the route passes through the rolling landscape around Dalmose, where ancient hollow roads cut their way down between the hills.

Sorø – land of forests and lakes

When Sjællandsleden crosses into Sorø Municipality, the landscape changes dramatically. Open fields give way to large continuous woodland areas, and the route passes close to Sorø Lake with Sorø Academy sitting like a medieval mirror image on the shore. The forests around Sorø rank among the oldest broadleaf woodlands on Zealand, and here you walk beneath beech trees that have stood for generations. The path winds past the Tystrup-Bavelse Lakes, where silence is broken only by birdsong and the wind in the treetops. Kalundborg – coast and peninsula route

West of Sorø, Sjællandsleden turns towards Kalundborg Municipality, and the landscape opens up again towards the Great Belt and the West Zealand fjords. Here you encounter Røsnæs – Zealand's westernmost point – with wild heath and dramatic coastal cliffs. The route along Kalundborg Fjord offers sea views that stretch all the way to Samsø on clear days. The open landscape on this stretch is shaped by ice age formations and common grazing areas where sheep roam freely. Tissø, Zealand's fourth-largest lake, lies as a still mirror of water in the middle of a bird paradise, and from Fugledegård you can watch thousands of migratory birds in season.

Holbæk – fjord landscape and cultural history

The northernmost part of Sjællandsleden in West Zealand takes you through Holbæk Municipality, where the route follows the bays and peninsulas of Holbæk Fjord. Tuse Næs stretches out into the fjord like a green finger, and from the path you have views across the fjord's many islets and islands. The landscape here is gentler and more rounded, shaped by the melting of the ice age glaciers. You pass through Holbæk Plantation, where conifer trees provide shelter on windy days, and further out along the reclaimed areas of Lammefjorden – a fascinating piece of cultural landscape where the fjord bed became fertile farmland.

Sjællandsleden is marked with red dots and arrows, and the West Zealand section can be walked in several independent stages of varying length. The route crosses public transport at several points, so you can put together your own journey without having to walk the entire stretch at once. The terrain alternates between forest paths, field tracks, gravel trails and short stretches along country roads. Most stages are accessible for ordinary hikers without special equipment, though good walking shoes are recommended, especially in the forested areas where the path can be damp.
